Development

Being the largest economics department in Southern Taiwan, there lies a heavy responsibility on the department to support and benefit surrounding Yunlin & Chiayi area industry. We are always striving to hire more highly qualified and dedicated professors to help further improve the learning environment. Moreover, it is our hope to work together with related departments to enhance the overall learning experience.

It is our objective to nurture and guide students with a mind for economics and the capacity to find solutions to the pressing problems of an ever-changing society. Upon evaluating the country's economic development of the present and future, we have designed, to the best of our capability, several important course developments as follows:

    1. Economic theory and Quantitative method:
To study the optimization of consumers' and producers' behaviors from the view of Microeconomics and to study the problems of national income, unemployment, wage and inflation from the view of Macroeconomics. In addition to its theoretical basis, the study in Quantitative method also emphasizes its application in empirical study.

    2. International economics:
To study the topics including international trade, international finance, foreign investment, multi-national enterprises, international cooperation and economic integration.

    3. Industrial organization:
To study the formation, evolution and performance of economic organization. In addition, the discussions of competition strategy, market share and research & development are included in this field.

    4. Economics of development:
To study the economic development in less-developed countries. The major topics includes the constrain factor, the formation and evaluation of economic planning. Furthermore, this field also study the economic development experience, capital formation and the utilization of human resources in the developing countries.

    5. Public economics:
To study the role of public sector in an economy, the factor of public policy formation and the interaction between public and private sectors in an economy.

It is the department's goal to strengthen "Continuous Education", educate future leaders in fields essential to achieve globalization and the liberation of policies (as international trade, international finance and industrial organization etc), and heighten the quality of the populace. Furthermore, in conjunction with the government's target of lifelong learning, a "Pre-master program" was established in 1997. With a size limit of 40, this class welcomes undergraduate commerce students as well as people outside the university who are in commerce related fields. Upon completing this course, with 80% attendance and a passing grade, students receive a pre-master credits. Should a student of the "pre-master program" wish to enter, and passes the entrance examination and is accepted into, the department's Master program, the credits obtained may be transferred and used towards the Master degree. Moreover, as of 1999, the general population of the Yunlin & Chiayi area will be given an opportunity to return to university and obtain a Master degree through the "part-time master degree program". It is estimated that 30 students will be admitted each year, and will complete 41 credits (6 of which are from the thesis) in 2~5 years and obtain a degree. Further, the department has also instituted a "Industrial development and forecasting center" during the second semester of 1998 to actively participate in policy related studies and to enable both professors and students to participate in such programs and activities.

It is undeniable that in the forever changing technological future, the knowledge shall play a more important role than the diploma, and a university education becomes more than merely a preparation for further intellectual pursuits. Thus, the department strives to approach education in a manner that will allow students to apply theory to practice, knowledge to exercise, and interconnect all areas of learning to meet the demands of a fast paced future. Of National Chung Cheng University's Economics Department, we have such faith and anticipation, that in taking the responsibility to educate today's young to produce the elite leaders of tomorrow, we can and will step towards a prosperous economy and a bright and promising future.
